Catching up on my copies of BWS, these I came across in the May issue:
the first is a beautiful example of modern "GPS-enabled" voyaging, and how far it is now possible to go with rather limited sailing experience:
The couple sailing the cat BUMFUZZLE around the world are describing the leg of their voyage from the Bahamas, though the canal, and on to the Marquesas... Midway between the Galapagos and Marquesas, they have some nice settled weather wherre they decide to tackle some boat projects underway...
So, the guy decides it's time to clean and re-grease his cockpit winches... Not until he is reassembling one, does he realize that it can also be cranked in a counter-clockwise direction... A mid-ocean epiphany, after having sailed over 6,000 miles - "Ahhh, so THAT'S what they mean by '2-speed winches'..." LMAO!
The second is from their review of the new Swan 46, that $900K beauty that they categorize as an ideal couple's cruiser, "easily managed offshore, yet simple enough for an impromptu afternoon sail..."
It's amazing, the point that we've come to where we're expected to read stuff like the following, and simply take it for granted... Perhaps the writer was stiving for a bit of tongue in cheek, but somehow I doubt it - this sounds more like something you'd read in TOWN & COUNTRY magazine, or perhaps PALM BEACH LIFE:
"Sweat is uncivilized when cruising, and thus FIERCE PRIDE has been upgraded with electric winches instead of the standard manual ones..."
And then:
"On many boats meals with a full crew require at least someone to perform an "uncivilized" shimmy between a bulkhead and a corner of the table. Swan has "restored crew dignity" with the sliding dinette top that creates room to slide in between the settee and daggerboard trunk..."
Italics are mine. Need I say any more? (grin)
best regards,
Jon
