We've been thru that here both on the mountain and on the water recently. Moutaineers don't want to pay the five dollar rental for locator beacon so rescue folks have to spend tens of thousands of dollars and days of looking for them when they get lost on Mt. Hood.
On the water there'd been a Pearson 30 that was down to 2500 bucks. Guy "had some time" so he bought the boat and immediately and without any planning took off for upriver to Gilliam County, last week. Only he didn't figure for weather as a BIG wind storm and front came through clocking a peak gust of 100 mph in the Gorge with sustained 55-60 mph winds, didn't figure for sand bars, ran aground, spent a night on an island making do, and when finally "rescued" was unsure if the 800 dollar salvage/tow fee was gonna be too much to pay and thinking just let the boat go. He at least admitted he's been "stupid".
