Antifreeze

Yes. The aluminum in some Yanmar engines will react with some antifreeze components (silicon I guess) and form cavitation bubbles which will erode the aluminum and may eventually cause a failure. Yanmar is very, very specific about which brands of antifreeze to use. Consult your engine manual.

But this doesn't apply to the venerable GM and JH series engines that power much of the sailboat fleet. These are made of good old heavy cast iron.
