I like to think of the America's cup more like Formula One where the design of the vehicle plays as much a part as the driver. Of course that means you need to have a good enough rule that defines the venue and limits of design so you don't have one guy show up in a Maclearan F1 and the other show up in a Subaru STI. Both can race very well, just not on the same course.
