Canadian sail training vessel sinks with no hands (fortunately)

"The 188-foot (57.5-meter) Concordia was carrying 48 students plus the crew, according to Kate Knight, head of West Island College International of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, which operates the Class Afloat program for students in the final two years of high school and the first year of college."

The sudden capsizing about 300 miles off the coast of Brazil was attibuted to a microburst, the ship going from upright to sinking in a matter of seconds. Fortunately it was at a time of day when all the students were in class on the upper deck. I suppose the angle of vanishing stability is way less than on the typical offshore rated monohull. Size matters but not in this situation. Very lucky outcome!

The article has 42 photos with it including some in the College's office with a model of the Concordia in the background. Toward the end of the series there are also photos of the vessel under sail in happier times.
