I use a cheap wooden handled thing that looks like a welding slag chipper with a wedge-shaped head. A slag hammer would work similarly. Inexpensive and just the right size and shape end. A framing hammer also works well - maybe that isn't the right word, but I mean a claw hammer with a "straight" claw instead of a curved one. I don't know what a masonry hammer is, so I might have already described one.
