In early May, I asked for suggestions about how to remove a "frozen" gear spindle from a 30+ year old Lewmar 40 winch. I opted to start by saturating the spindle with PB Blaster -- a squirt once or twice a day for a week then let it sit for two weeks while I was off cruising. Yesterday, I tried again to remove the spindle and it broke free after a half-dozen solid whacks. It appears dried grease and corrosion were the primary culprits.
