We were heading toward the Rio Dulce for hurricane season. When we got to Providencia we switched nets from the 'Southwest Caribbean net' to the 'Northwest Caribbean Net'. The day we checked in for the first time a cruiser in Belize was talking about the new fees he was charged. There was some feedback from another cruiser in Belize that heard the charge was being started and he didn't think it was official ( some local port captain bilking cruisers for extra cash ). This talk was a daily occurrence.
One of the cruisers in Belize checked into it ( as he was there ) and found that indeed it was a new charge that was implemented by the government and for the next 2 weeks,,, all the talk was of the new, now confirmed charge of 10.00 a day per person.
We crossed the bar into the Rio Dulce on May 28th and went to 'Fronteras' on the Rio and put the boat to bed at 'Monkey Bay' for hurricane season. In talking to local cruisers on the Rio we found that the rumor went through there last month and was accepted as truth, so, it looks like it's being implemented.
Everyone in this area believes the charge is happening at this time. Their is no info the contrary.
We'll find out in November when we return to the boat and head to Belize.
That's the story.
I can say that I also tried to find it on the net and found nothing.
