On our way back to Ft.lauderdale from the Eastern Caribbean we crossed the Gulfstream and made our way to the entrance and under the 17th St bridge. We worked our way to the Bahia Mar Marina and pulled into the slip we rented. I only had a 30 amp plug and the power was 50 amp so I didn't plug in the shore power. The next morning it became really hot and I decided to run the generator for air conditioning until I went to Sailorman to get a used plug.
I started the generator and before the air conditioner was putting out cold air it stopped. I tried to start it and it wouldn't start. Not finding any problem I opened the hole in the 200 gallon fuel tank and dropped the stick in it to see how much fuel we had. TINK! went the stick as it hit the bottom of the tank. " Hey Rey!, listen to this! TINK! TINK!
We had run out of fuel one minute after starting the generator. That means that the main engine had about 30 seconds of fuel before it would also quit. When you think about making your way from Nassau to Ft. lauderdale and have 30 seconds of fuel left after stopping the engine, you're really cutting it a a bit too close.
I'll never forget that hollow sound of an empty fuel tank. TINK!
Just like Craig, I thought I had more fuel.
