We have been here about a week - 23 sailing (motoring) days from Honolulu.
Standard sailing directions call for going due north from Hawaii staying west of the stationary north Pacific high until, on the north side of the high the winds turn westerly. That's the way it is supposed to work. This year the high decided not to be stationary - it moved to engulf us. First it flattened out all the way to the international dateline. Then it moved way north as we motored through it. It was like it had consciousness and it wanted to stay with us. Another boat that left Honolulu with us thought they were trapped in the twilight zone. Downloading the weather fax and GRIBs daily it seemed like wind was always two days away - it didn't come until two days before arrival.
We left Honolulu with 100 gallons of diesel and arrived in Ucluelet with 20. Running the engine at low RPMs sure saved on fuel consumption but made for a very slow, noisy trip.
It's pretty cold up here, I'm ready to sail back to Hawaii. Just kidding.
