Most of you have been to boat shows. This is what it's like to work at one for four days...
I spent the first three days manning the Dutchman booth by myself. We have a 20' mast, boom, and sail rigged with our MDS nylon sail track (which makes the sail drop like a ton of bricks when you let the halyard go), a Dutchman sail flaking system, and a boom brake. I raise and lower the sail an average of 300 times a day at these shows, I figure. People passing by stop and stare, trying to figure out what's going on, and after awhile you hear the same comments.
"Boy, my sail doesn't come down like that!" or "I'll bet your arms are getting tired!" or "How does the sail flake like that all by itself?".
By the third day, standing out in the hot sun, I think I went a little nutty.
"Boy, my sail doesn't come down like that!"
"It's our latest product. Lead battens."
"How does the sail flake like that all by itself?".
"It's a trick. We have monofilament running through the sail."
"What are those pockets for at the foot of the sail?"
"Tips."
The best was a comment from a passerby... "That sail comes down faster than a prom dress!" LOL!
On Sunday, my girlfriend was at the show and helped out so it was much better. Next stop, Annapolis!
