I think an orbital sander is fine for the rough sanding, but you really need to...
Sound about right...
220 or 320 between coats. 600 is too fine.
I may be going against the grain,... but I've seen more than a little damage done to brightwork with electric sanders.

There's a few tricks for the dark wood, that don't seem to work.
