Cruising Sailors Forum Archive

Amazing, can't make up their minds. 12 months isn't bad though.

We're selling Tropical Dance. At present we're doing the last cruise and taking it to Florida from California. We have a purchaser that wants her and the thought was that, at present, it's on the Rio Dulce River of Guatemala. I was wondering if they purchased her in Guatemala, cruised the Caribbean for a year and brought her to Florida if they would be liable for sales tax upon return to Florida.

I asked my broker in Florida about it and was told yes. The only way out of it was if you had your own boat dock as by making a contract with a marina the state will find out. If that doesn't happen they will likely never know. As I understand, the tax is something like 6 percent so it's not quite as bad.

Selling a boat during bad economic times sucks.
