Speaking of similar experience: As a junior officer assigned to a Destroyer on Patrol Station in the Taiwan Straits, we were often in really unpleasant seas, with no option to seek a better riding course. One night at dinner in the wardroom, the ship took an especially vicious roll, and the Plate of Roast Ham became airborne, flying atwartships from the Supply Officer at one end of the table to the Captain, at the other, "downhill" end. The Captain bailed out of his chair as the Ham caromed off the end of the table and into his now empty seat. The Supply Officer, with a straight face, murmered "If there's one thing I can't stand it's a chicken goalie." It was not easy for us at the Junior end of the table to keep from breaking up.
