A learning experience. The Groco had some issues for sure, there was a broken flapper valve in the water intake and what appeared to be thin plastic strips clogging the innards. The upgrade kit looked like a real pile of random crap, pieces of stuff left over from other projects or something. Obviously the old style Groco HC/HE heads must have had some real engineering deficencies which Peggy tried to explain to me which I went ahead and ignored anyhow. When I started putting the pieces in place, things became more evident.
The advice to do this wearing rubber gloves was sound. The idea that I could jam a rag into the hose to the holding tank to keep "stuff" from coming out was a bad one. Having a nice lunch of cheese, crackers and Chardonnay ready on the boat while removing the head was perhaps a worse idea than the rag.
With all of this valuable experience I plan on reinstalling it in theboat this weekend.
