We were there quite a bit ago in 2002.
The town was really nice. Bars, restaurants, shops that were different from St Thomas or the BVI's. More the feel of an isolated Caribbean island. There were a number of shops that had some well documented 'shipwreck coins'. The Admiral still wears her 'Crucian' hook bracelet she got a Sonya's. It's the must thing to do in St. Croix, get one of those bracelets. Very nice and not just for women.
Oh, the waters? It's a little dicy near the harbor entrance but nothing to worry about. We have a 6' draft and anchored just outside the harbor behind a reef. The entrance channel is well marked. The dingy to town is short and there's a hotel the other direction that you can pull the dingy up on the beach and just hang out and have some lunch.
It was worth the visit.
