... I have five people doors, these on a 1986 Tartan 40, traditional layout, traditional materials, lots of teak. The doors are panel, solid teak rails & styles, the panels are probably veneer marine ply, but they could be solid. The finish is 3 coats of Epi Gloss on all the solid surfaces and then 2-3 coats of Rubbed Effect on the veneer panels. The old hardware is probably Perko, it's all pitted, corroded and 25 years old, probably can not be cleaned up. The hinges however were relatively easy to clean up and came out great, we soaked them in lacquer thinner, brushed them up and lubed with coconut oil ... look & work great. So all the door latches are Rim Sets. The minimum thickness of my doors is 7/8", some are full 1", so I think I can probably find mortise Latch/Lock sets that will work. And mortise the catch as well.
Any pros & cons for doing one or the other ? Sure, the mortise will be a bit more work, I'd make a jig, and I think they would be nicer, no ? Whatever I do I'll have to find trim rings that will cover the old pieces.
Thanks, cheers, John
