The wind blew the water out of LI Sound.

The forecast was for wind 20 to 30 mph out of the northwest with possible gusts 50 to 60 mph. Combine that with a full moon and the forecast also called for low tide three to four feet below normal. We draw five feet, and have six feet at the dock at a normal low tide, so I was concerned.

A full moon and strong winds out of the northwest resulted in tides much lower than normal. At 6:17PM my depth sounder showed 1.7 feet, in between flashing all kinds of bizarre depths like 494 feet. It's mounted a foot or two below the waterline, so we were probably stuck about a foot in the mud.

LI Sound Buoy 44040 showed wind in the 20s all day with gusts in the 30s. At least we avoided the 50 to 60!

On the plus side, the boat stopped rocking and rolling in the gusts. Looking out the windows, all the other boats had stopped rolling as well, so I guess we were all stuck in the mud.

I used to tell a powerboat friend of mine that if you can't tie good knots, tie lots of them. In preparation of the high winds, I tied every piece of rope on the boat to the dock. If you can't tie on good dock lines, tie on lots of them.
