When we go to a new area we quite often go to the local yacht club. Even if you're not a member, most yacht clubs will let you in as a guest. Just explain who you are and tell them you're a member of the 'Stockton Sailing Club' as there is no yacht club in Stockton. Then is only a matter of saying you want to go sailing. If you do that you'll be on the water in a day or two.

Even though you're not a yacht club member they should let you in. Especially since you're from out of town and want to go sailing. Perhaps you could call all the clubs in the area you're going ahead of time and find out what day of the week they race. Then show up ahead of time. Many that race for fun invite out of town people on their boats.

It's also a good way to meet some nice folks.
