As I recall, years before "all digital" my cellular modem (which was "snail" quick -- maybe 18kbs) had a longer range over water. My cell phone too.

Now, with the new, faster, better digital cellular, I think the range is a little lower. The difference is you're getting a much faster connection.

I think that under some circumstances, you might see longer distances. I've recieved signals from Cape May at greater distances than, say Nantucket.
