We were maneuvering to start a casual fun race when we saw them so I didn't have time to get the camera. We gave them a "Hoot" and Thumbs-Up and they waved back.
About 4 years ago we were coming down from Barkley Sound and a few miles off Cape Disappointment sailing on a nice broad reach when a humpback on a reciprocal course surfaced about 50 feet away. Definitely a humpback since we had been watching them almost every day while up at Barkley. Just a normal surfacing not the acrobatics L'Orca saw. Must have been in about the same location.
If we had been motoring the whale would have heard us no doubt. I wonder if there isn't something like those little Anti-Deer whistles that people put on the front of their cars that would do the same thing for sailboats. Maybe recorded Humpback whale sounds on a through-hull speaker. Just as long as it isn't the "Hey, big boy. Come on over... I'm ready!" song.
