In Response To: Remote Wifi antenna for Mac? ()

There's a strong endorsement for the Rogue Wave variant on this site, but the full deal is something like $475. You can probably get up and running for half that if you do some shopping for the individual pieces (antenna, wire, etc.) I'm thinking of some version of Bullet 2HP by Ubiquiti for myself. There are a lot of different versions packaged by different folks from complete with everything to just the bare bones version.

I'm not that excited about adding another antenna on deck but probably will when we're out cruising this next year. I have good friends from Seattle who sailed to New Zealand who have one of the Bullet 2HP systems and endorse it. He has it hooked to an ethernet switch and onboard low power wireless router. I think I can get by with plugging the ethernet cable from the Bullet into my Mac and then use web sharing from that Mac for the benefit of phones, iPads and other computers on board. Most people use inverters for power computers and WIFI. Some people have had success driving the POE (power of internet-- think I have that right) connection to the Bullet directly from the battery. The supply must not drop below 11 volts, I have read. That means stable power from not-too-depleted betters and a short cable run to the antenna. Since I'm already plugging in 110v adapters for computers, I'll probably just put up with the conversion losses unless I have lots of tinker time on my hands.
