Getting a good grip is most important for furling lines. A thin line will cut your hands. Actual load isn't that high, it just seems so because you have no mechanical advantage just pulling directly on the line.

BTW. I mounted a Lewmar ST30 on my stern rail so Nell could furl the jib. It is so slow that I just use it as a cleat for the furling line unless it it really blowing.
