In Response To: Question for Todd D. ()

The town of Southwest Harbor. The town has five rental mooring that were $20 a night last season. I don't know what the rate is this season. They have always been first come/first served, so if one is open just pick it up and pay the harbormaster at the Manset dock. There are also a few moorings in Southwest Harbor that belong to Ralph Stanley. They were $35 a night two years ago, but they are quite far up the harbor and correspondingly well protected.

The Williams yard up Somes Sound at Hall Quarry also has a few rental moorings. You could give them a call. They are quite a bit off the beaten track though.

Abels up near the head of Somes Sound on the east side may also have some moorings, but I have never talked to them.

There are also several town moorings at each of the Cranberry islands. They are generally free, but a long dinghy ride to anything other than the Cranberries.

When I checked this spring Hinckley was charging $175 a week for a mooring. Their moorings have by far the best views of anyplace on the Great Harbor, but they can be a bit lumpy in an easterly or strong northerly. The dock is staffed 7 days a week this year and they have restrooms/showers/laundry right there. They are also a short walk from an Island Explorer stop (at the Cranberry Islands Dock).

Morris Yachts has moorings in Bass Harbor. They are wide open to the Southwest and can be uncomfortable if it blows more than 15 knots or so from the SW. They are also pretty far off the beaten track since there is little in Bass Harbor for the visitor. They are only a one minute walk from the Island Explorer bus stop at the ferry dock. Their web site says moorings are $30/night or $150/week.

I notice that Northeast Harbor has jacked their mooring rates up to $40 a night for a mid-30s boat. Ouch!
