"Scaly ripples, no foam creasts", or "Small wavelets, crests glassy, no breaking",?

Hard to say. The scale is over 200 years old. I know I can't sail my boat until I see some wind.

Before the forecast Southerly started, we had a light easterly start up that roughened the surface of a glassy flat bay. It stuck with us starting with about 2.5 knots of boat speed building to maybe 3.5 for over an hour.

Nice flat water helps to make it easier for me to sail. The boat can latch onto a light breeze and hold on to it with no waves to rattle the wind loose from the sails.

When I took this shot, I would guess it was Force 2, and climbing the scale. This is sailing south out of Gilkey Harbor on Penobscot Bay.

1 1-3 Light Air Scaly ripples, no foam crests Smoke drift indicates wind direction, still wind vanes
2 4-6 Light Breeze Small wavelets, crests glassy, no breaking Wind felt on face, leaves rustle, vanes begin to move
