What are them there hurrican thingies anyway? We did have the famous Columbus Day Storm in Portland in 1962 with the peak gust of 116 mph in the city. On the coast at Cape Blanco the anemometer showed the highest gust of 145 mph but that was ater one of the 3 anemometer cups flew off. The storm moved fast and caught everyone by surprise. 46 fatalities were reported in Northern California, Oregon and Washington. It was a rare case of an extratropical cyclone.
Best of luck to everyone in the path.
