Formula one and drag racing cars have little to do with street automobiles, but that doesn't mean the two aren't valid sports. In most of AC45 races so far, the boat that started first did not finish first. AC45 match racing starts today.

And if you want to see these boats race, look at the Plymouth races. Unfortunately, San Diego is a very poor area for sailboat racing because of the light air - particularly for these types of boats. In heavier air, the speeds these boats can reach puts them in more competition and provides many more situations requiring racing tactics and frequent changing of lead positions. I know that sounds backwards, but just watch the Plymouth races.

Personally, I think this AC series is perfect and long overdue. Watching heavy, slow boats waddle around courses is not exciting, even for a recreational racer like myself. It certainly was the death knell for gaining viewership and new interest in the sport. I usually don't have a lot of positive things to say about Ellison, but he has designed and executed this cup series perfectly and with a touch of genius and a lot of exciting technological breakthroughs.
