It was as you describe, drill a hole and I think epoxy in. I think I backed up the hole in the cockpit locker top with plywood. It worked very well by the way, I had a 5000 or 5500 I think. If you can't find one, any metal shop could make one or you could with a drill press. The pin has to withstand a lot of constant movement.
