SGC has a terrible rep...
In Response To: SGC vs Icom SSB ()

I have known at two or three cruisers who had a lot of trouble with them. They have needed multiple repairs and they don't last long between repairs. Add to that the high costs they charge for service made them a terrible product. They stopped making them a few years back.

OTOH the Icom 802 is the Cadilac of SSBs, They had a clipping problem on their earlier 802s - you can read all the details on the SSCA discussion board. The 802 is good if you have both SSB and Ham licenses. It can be used for both pretty easily. Also, the 802 is a much newer radio than the SGC and has more advanced technology.
