As I mentioned, I've found a line above the boom seems to work. 
In Response To: Since we're on the subject of bird droppings ()
() I use like a 1/4" clothesline, cheap rope. I run it from mast to topping lift, about 18 feet. The line is about a foot above the boom and the birds can see it. They need some room to set their wings for touch down and take off so this seems to work on my boat.
