As I recall after the Fasnet Race led to studies

The broader keels fare far worse if "tossed" by a HUGE wave.

Sometimes a skid is good. Control surfaces are always better than not.

IF you believe the description. The "drove" into a wall of water that was about the LWL.

The take-aways for me:

Don't be on a lee shore that goes from very deep to very shallow steeply;
Don't have your crew not hooked-up;
Don't have your crew on the rail (even though they were surprised by a rogue wave)

It's easy to second guess that situation from the comfort my desk chair. BUT there are lessons here. Whether I would have been surprised too -- who knows?
