We have a Micrologic Explorer GPS bought in 1992. It had a 10 year lithium battery which lasted 11 years. I replaced it with another which only lasted 9 years.
Last week we got the dreaded "Cold Start Needed"! OK, so we started the process: Lat Lon Time Date - but when entering 2012 it stated "Outside Range". Now what? Gave it some thought and decide to use a year which had May 6th as a Sunday - 2007 - and continued. Took a while, but first 1 satellite, then 2, then 3, then 5! Voila - and when we checked the date and time - you guessed it spot on and 2012. We knew those came from the GPS system, but weren't sure it would override "outside range"; obviously it did. Inputted a couple of known Waypoints tested range and bearing - perfect.
One last humorous tidbit, when we asked a sales person at the local West Marine if new GPSs needed a cold start - he replied "What's that"!!!!!
