I am trying to hit an inland 40 miles wide, plus you can normal see an inland from 8 miles, I am trying to hit a target 56 miles wide during the day at night it get better light glow are easy to see from 50 miles.
No I will not be able to tell where I am but I will do my best to do a best DR guess from yesterday fix and hope it is within 10 miles.
As SG said you got jets and Contrails. Also Islands have clouds over them during the day.
Just before dawn and after sunset would shoot stars that are to the north and south and compare them to my DR to use as a deference each day to see how far north or south I have gone. I will do a noon site and set the watch each day do a noon site and it will tell me how far east of west I have gone. Using the nautical almanac will tell me how much the sun is moving north or south each day and I can then use it to tell me how much I gone north or south.
If I have my chart that if I measure the lenght of day , that tell me my latitude on board I would use it also.
I would move up or down to the latitude of Papeete and run that east or west until I ran in to it.
