the nut securing one of the chainplates failed and the chainplate pulled out of the deck. The nut was carbon steel -- I assume it was used to prevent galling. Inside the hull, the studs and nuts of four of the six chainplates had been fiberglassed over. After I cut away the fiberglass, I discovered the other nuts were also in bad shape. The chainplates, however, seemed fine. Discussed dye penetrant testing with the service manager but we concluded, given the apparent age of the chainplates, that it would be better just to replace them. So, perhaps unnecessary, but it gives me peace of mind. We had quite a bit of boisterous sailing last season and I found myself anxious about the rig and reducing sail to play it safe. Didn't like the feeling.
Just picked up the new chainplates yesterday. Polishing is the next step.
