This has to rate as one of the most unfathomable decisions by a sailor since Capt. Robin Walbridge left New London with the BOUNTY, and sailed straight into Hurricane Sandy...
These two allegedly "highly experienced professional sea captains" were delivering an IP SP cruiser from the Chesapeake to FL a few weeks ago, just as the massive Northeaster was developing in the vicinity of Cape Hatteras... Still, they elected to go OUTSIDE the Outer Banks, monitoring the weather on their iPhone... Then, suddenly, "the storm went 'off-script'"... LMFAO! Who'd a thunk something like that could ever happen around Hatteras, in March?
Rarely will you ever see a more profound ignorance of the risks of being anywhere in the neighborhood of Hatteras in the winter... The fact that they actually considered Oregon, Hatteras, and Ocracoke Inlets to be viable bailout options during a powerful winter storm boggles the mind...
Pretty impressive video embedded in this link... Really shouldn't be part of the job description of CG Rescue Swimmers and helo crews, however, to have to needlessly place their lives in jeopardy, to save the sorry asses of those who commit such a willfully stupid act of 'seamanship'...
