Any coating, paint, varnish, fails eventually.

"Wooding" is the old term used when removing that failed coating. It's run it's course and you can no longer re-coat it, as it no longer adheres to the base, Gene. You "wood" it and start from scratch to build a new coat of paint or varnish.

It's a typical woodenboat term used when brightwork or hull coatings fail. Even today's miracle two part coatings fail, eventually, and lose adhesion to the base.

There's no term for removing awlgrip, yet(I've done that on my boat,...), at least not a term I could use here.
