Before he fit a hull plank, he'd run a roller down the edge of the plank, compressing the fibers about 1/16"over the center 1/3 of the plank. Then he'd plane that smooth and fit the plank. The same for following planks. When it hit water, the compressed areas would expand creating a drum tight seal. Brilliant!
