FYI -- Perseid meteor shower this weekend

A good time to be out on the boat if the sky is clear, they should peak Sunday and Monday nights. Moon sets close to midnight for best viewing; you'll want to be out late.

"The annual shower is expected to pick up over the weekend, with as many as 100 meteors streaking across the sky per hour.

According to NASA, viewing this year should be exceptional if skies are clear, because the moon will be in crescent shape and set early.

Amplifying view opportunities, the moon "will set shortly after midnight, leaving dark skies from late night until dawn," the agency wrote on its website.

Sunday and Monday nights are expected to be the best for Perseid viewing. The shower began in mid-July, but peaks each year around mid-August.

The shower is so-called because the meteors, which travel around 37 miles per second, appear to originate in the Perseus constellation.

Really, the meteors originate from the orbit of the Comet Swift-Tuttle, according to NASA.

Stargazers should look toward the northeast sky, where the Perseus constellation will sit, for best viewing."
