Voltage may look good, but is not indicative of the capacity of the connection to transmit load

So, if the voltage "seems" okay, then it's likely a connection issue.
Have you tried to simulate a "load" with just the engine starting battery. Do you have an inverter -- you could try and see if you can run a couple of hairdryers or whatever.
My first reaction was Larry's, but Craig's and others are plausible too.
