They were on the fishing boat and cargo ship for almost four weeks after being rescued. But I'm not clear whether that time is included in the 91 days or not.
If they were being hit by squall after squall, I assume they could have caught rain water.
I'm curious about their boat, equipment, the damage suffered, their experience, etc. but a search hasn't turned up anything. The linked story plays up the human interest angle and all the other reports I've found all seem to be derived from the same AP feed.
But I agree. Looks like clueless and lucky. I still don't understand the bit about "They could have used a sail called a genoa, she said, but they risked snapping off the mast and losing their radio and ability to communicate." Was their standing rigging compromised? What radio did they have? Just VHF. Or SSB? And before finally abandoning, they had contact with at least two ships yet apparently opted to stay on board.
