a little fridge help

Hi all,
don't have a lot of experience with layup, and now have a problem.
put the boat on the hard 17 months ago to paint and put on new non-skid.
during this time all systems were shut off. the other day, I started the
refrigeration. this is a small isotherm unit with an evaportator.
the system is about 6 years old, and for the first almost 5 years, was never
shut off for long. maybe once or twice for a couple weeks. Well, it runs, but
doesn't cool. So the question is, is it worth paying the tech to check it out?
do these little systems tend to die after being shut off for a while? I don't
relish putting in a new system, about $750, but don't want to pour a bunch
into a tech either. one of the issues is there doesn't seem to be a way to
just top up the refrigerant. I was told that I would need an adapter to put
on the low pressure line. any comment?
thanks
Rick
