For contrast to Cary Ali, here's SAPHAEDRA's cockpit, a 1965 K Aagie Neilsen ocean racer. 
Like the Fontaine design group, K Aagie Neilsen scratched his head for countless hours designing the cockpit for this 51' ocean racing ketch. Saphaedra looks well used and is still racing today. How about that side deck? Wide enough for Bistro tables and chairs.
