It almost looks like slow motion, teetering on the brink like that. Seems like there would have been enough time to ease the traveller. If you look right about 0:24, you can see the guy hand holding the sheet frantically trying to do something as the hull comes up. By about 2 seconds later the steering has to have been lost.

Must have been a surprise for the rest of the crew, crawling out of the escape hatch at the end....
