The 13-day northeaster from last week wasn't strong but it was prolonged, and here in western LIS that means a long fetch as the wind blows water down the ~90 nm of Long Island Sound. Such a prolonged period of significant wave action takes it's toll on any chafe points.
Unfortunately for this boat and its owner, the anti-chafe provisions weren't up to the task. Note the pickup stick is still on the bow, indicating it boat broke free from its mooring. The rope tied to the mast might indicate an unsuccessful un-grounding attempt. Considering the granite shore it's very likely holed and will need flotation bags and/or crane assistance.
