There's not much to insulate a kid today from what's going on in the world.

I remember the JFK (10 years old) moment, and I remember going to school to tell my kids(10+- years old) their aunt was ok in NYC. What horror that was to see in real time, and the kids saw it as well on a zillion different media. Asassinations have given way to regular mass murder around the world, even as you mention, in our backyards, and it's real time.
The insulation of the 50's and 60's I grew up in is gone today. They do have a more fatalistic view, mos seem very aware of the state of the world.
