Here's Nike in his usual position while underway. Not so sure he loves sailing but he does love being with his owners. He does just fine on the boat because the whippet temperament is to be a couch potato 99% of the time. Whippets are also good boat dogs because they don't drool, don't shed much, don't smell, are medium sized (around 25-30 pounds) so not difficult to lift. They also have a thin coat and dry quickly, although they do get cold. If you need a coat so do they because not only are they thin coated, if kept to a proper weight they have no body fat. Nike swims but he's not a strong swimmer, he'll dive in to go after a swan so we keep a vest on him while on the boat or dock. He loves the beach and will chase a ball into the water, but he does find the waves a bit daunting.
Nike is originally from Maine. We connected with him through whippet rescue when he was about a year old, and we're glad we found him. BTW the fancy collar is a "martingale" type semi-choke. Nike is well behaved on a leash but whippets can easily pull out of a conventional collar because their long necks are almost as wide as their heads. I prefer a wide collar when walking him on a leash because it's more gentle by spreading the load when he does pull.
