A highly experienced Maine Maritime instructor wrote an interesting article on lessons to be learned from this event. I agree with one of his key insights, that raw experience doesn't always lead to better results in the future. In some instances, having survived a rough or dangerous passage in the past might lead to complacency - 'I've sailed through worse weather than what's forecast.' I think most sailors could look back and recognize mistakes that were made, poor decisions, times where luck played a role … and need to make sure lessons are learned. "We all could have learned a lot from that trip, but I think we just got bolder."
