Yup, no finer sound than the ocean breaking on a nearby shore...
In Response To: A Short Essay on Noise ()

Hey Chris,

Here on Barnegat Bay, there are a couple of wonderful anchorages right behind the 8 mile long barrier beach of Island Beach State Park... Even in relatively settled summer conditions, the daily seabreeze is sufficient to brew a noisy surf that will last throughout the night... Mix that with a bit of "wind in the wires", there's nothing better... Always a bit of a delicate balance, however - I've gone out there in a real NE blow, and the wind can start to overpower the sound of the surf...

Still, it's a bit distant, a few hundred meters, at least... For real proximity to crashing surf, two anchorages in particular along the East coast stand out, for me...

The first is Mistake Harbor, Down East Maine near Jonesport wriggle up into that spot where the anchor symbol is, and even in relatively settled conditions, the ocean swell breaking upon those granite ledges can be pretty impressive... And, if the fog horn at the Moose Peak Light is on, you've got the total Maine experience, full on...

best regards,

Jon
