main reefing, opinions please

We have an Isomat boom, ability to pull in two reefs from the cockpit. The boom has an internal car that shuttles fore and aft as you pull or release the reefing lines. It appears to me that things are just not right though. I have the boom in the family room and instructions from IP on how the thing works internally. It appears to me that the previous owner re-rigged it with oversize line and wayyyyy too much of it. Unfortunately with the brief amount of time we actually had to use the boat last season, we never really figured some things out, this was one of them. I did notice that it was extremely difficult to pull in a reef, never having had a setup like this I figured that was normal. Now that I actually have the opportunity to look at this and have the diagram from IP, I'm thinking it's not right. The line in question is a 7/16" double braid, reef #1 has 100", reef #2 has 110' of line rigged up. (it is a 12' boom) . I used some old 3/8" halyards as messenger lines to pull all the 7/16" line off and wash it over the weekend. I noticed that as soon as the 3/8" went over the sheeves and that internal car, things move way more free and easy......way more. It also does not drag going through the openings in the end of the boom, the other line does now that I get a closer look. Unfortunately, in all the documentation that came with the boat, the diagrams and such in the owner's manual and the information on the IP owner's websites, there is no place where the line size(diameter) is called out. I could see from the huge amount of line left over in the cockpit that the reefing lines were way too long but no actual length is specified either.

Is there any reason not to re-rig with 3/8"??
