Hi Neil...

Can't really say about the fuel lift pump - never used one. My tank is at the same height as the engine.

One of the things I like about Beta is that they tell you flat out what engine you are buying. Kubota engine parts are available everywhere. I wouldn't buy a spare starter or any other major part. I would get the shop manual although I have never needed mine. Save your money, knock wood you won't need anything major for many many years. Did you get the spares kit that Beta sells? IIRC it contains spare belts, filters, impellers and engine zincs. I buy filters from Kubota dealers - I like the idea of factory filters and they are reasonably priced.

I use the pre-heat at least ten seconds on every start except if the engine is already warm from recent running. Longer if it is very cold or hasn't been run for a long time. Engine has always started in a second or two. Hard starting engines are the ones that go through starters.

Sorry you had such a bad time with Volvo. From their reputation you are not alone.

My previous boat (many years ago now) had a Westerbeke engine. They hid the engine's origins. Parts were obscenely priced and hard to get. I never want to go through that headache again. One of the key factors in choosing Beta over Yanmar was parts availability.

The one thing I am big on is scheduled maintenance. Change the oil and filters at the recommended intervals, inspect the belts, etc.

I live about 140 miles south of Vancouver in Langley, WA - south end of Whidbey Island. A bit of a haul considering the possibly long waiting lines at the boarder. Are you planning to visit the U.S. while in BC?

Best,

Brian
